Design Issues

  • Physiological Issues:
I will have different users who are different sizes/gender/age and they all have to feel comfortable in the space, accessibility and physical comfort, size and function of my space will be important

  • Psychological Issues:
Schools need to be comfortable, but not to the point where the students could go to sleep, there should be plenty of natural light, classroom sizes shouldn’t be too large so that students can get the individual attention they need, and they need to feel like they have a voice and participation-areas for them to escape and be creative and expressive.  Because the site is located in downtown Columbus, there will ne noise coming from the streets

  • -Sociological Issues:
The ages range of my users-high schoolers, but also the adults teaching them, large age range of people that will be taking the community classes or coming for show.  The culture of the users-cultural would range with the city environment and with the individuals from all over the city coming to the school-nationalities and religions would vary, the school is important to the city and society because it gives students a creative outlet rather than a normal school, it will help kids to want to go to school and it accepts kids from all over the city as well so you don’t have to live in a certain area to attend the school

  • -Wayfinding Issues:
There are going to be people that enter the school who are going to have to know where to go-with 7 floors, getting around could get a little tricky. Signage, whether it’s words, arrows, maps, or colors or materials that “shows” the way-it has to be prominent, where my entrances and exits should be located- depends on what parts of the building are for the arts and what parts of the building are for normal classes- also having an entrance(s) that interact with other functions, like community classes or events

  • -Ergonomic Issues
Comfortable seats, but not too comfortable-students will be sitting for long periods of time, work stations/areas that are functional so that students can be efficient, ADA-I need to think about the standard size and how I can adapt my design with them

  • -Anthropometric Issues:
People of all ages will be using the space (especially the community areas) even though it’s a high school- spaces need to be functional for different sizes of people, height adjustable will come in handy for this

  • -Intellectual/Design Issues:
Reduced reflection of materials, especially on dry erase boards/screens, the large windows let in a lot of light- I will need some sort of screens that will block out some of that direct light when needed, the structure itself is historical, so I think the interior should match the aesthetic of the exterior-sustainable design, my site has height rather than length-7 floors, and how I arrange my space and what goes on which floors where it makes sense will be a challenge, the geographical region of Columbus can be extremely hot during the school year but also freezing as well-with the large windows, there needs to be good insulation, and issues with the current social changes, including technology-the school needs to have plenty of access to technology
